Good Design Shouldn’t Be Complicated

Good design is often mistaken for complexity. Many believe that a product must be intricate or packed with features to stand out. I disagree. In my experience, the best designs are those created with clear intention, focusing on simplicity and ease of use. When a design is straightforward, it not only looks better but also serves the user more effectively. This is especially true when it comes to products that require assembly or shipping. Simple assembly and flat pack design are key to reducing costs and improving customer satisfaction.
Why Intention Matters in Design
Design without intention can lead to confusion, frustration, and wasted resources. When I design something, I always start by asking: What is the purpose of this product? Who will use it? How can I make it easier for them?
Intentional design means every element has a clear purpose. It avoids unnecessary complexity and prioritizes the user’s experience. For example, the shoji screen I designed appears simple, yet serves multiple functions, it divides space, maintains a minimal aesthetic, and helps organize an environment. My two main goals were to create a product that is easy for customers to assemble, while also being cost-effective to produce and ship.
The Power of Simple Assembly
One of the biggest pain points for customers is complicated assembly. Products that come with dozens of parts and confusing instructions often end up returned or abandoned. For example, the shoji screen I designed utilizes minimal hardware, the entire piece requires only two screws, four dowel pins, and two prefabricated components. When designing for flat pack, I focus on:

A good example is the popular flat pack furniture from companies like IKEA. Their designs are intentional, focusing on ease of assembly and efficient packaging. This approach has made quality furniture affordable and accessible to many people.
Real-World Examples of Good Design
This shoji screen was designed with small living spaces in mind, where flexibility and efficiency are essential. It serves as a subtle room divider, creating a sense of separation and personal space without adding visual heaviness.
Beyond its primary function, the design integrates a coat hook to help reduce clutter, both physically and mentally, by providing a dedicated place for everyday items.
The structure is intentionally minimal and fabrication-friendly. The entire assembly consists of just four dowels and two screws, making it approachable and easy for users to put together. The central panel slides into a channel and is aligned using two dowels at the base. It is then secured from the top into the legs. The coat hook component is similarly located with dowels and locked into place, maintaining a clean and hardware-efficient build.

If you are designing a product, keep these tips in mind:
